Man, okay, so I needed another break. Of all the days I’d gone through so far—The First Day, Platform Day, Horsie Day, Gardening Day, IV-and-Vomiting-Up-Blood-Day—this one was the worst, hands fucking down. I heard her quiet sobbing against the wall as she watched me, for like hours, and I felt so sick of myself I wanted to die. I wished my mother had just punched herself in the stomach back when Dad broke that condom. I mean, I really wished I’d never existed.

And, at that point, I kinda realized I deserved it. Whatever she wanted to dish out, I deserved it. When I heard her trembling fingers pull a switch from the rack, I could’ve opened my mouth to try and talk her out of it, but I knew, deep down, I deserved everything she gave me. I just stared at the floor and waited.

She came up real close—like just out of arm’s reach. I felt her raise the switch and I tensed, but didn’t even say a word.

The blow never came. The next thing I heard was the rattle of the cane hitting the floor. When I turned to look at it in surprise, she bolted. Like a deer in flight, just bolted. Bounded up the stairs and was gone.

About two seconds later, Tony was down the stairs, looking utterly enraged. He took one look at me, snatched the cane off the ground, and started whipping my welted, sunburned skin. With nothing gagging me for the first time since the first day, I really screamed.

“Thank me, slave,” Tony snarled, as he continued to beat me. “Thank me for letting you live, you pathetic.” He hit me. “Piece.” He hit me again. “Of.” Yeah, you guessed it. “Shit!”

I twisted in my bonds and howled myself hoarse thanking him for not killing me. Tony just continued to beat me anyway. Jake came down a few minutes later, looking pretty upset. “She left,” he muttered, glaring at me. “Don’t know what the fucker said to her. She wouldn’t tell me.”

“I’ll fucking take his tongue,” Tony snarled. “Get me the fucking knife.”

“I didn’t say anything!” I shrieked, using that moment of his talking to Jake to get a word in edgewise. “I looked at her! I’m so fucking sorry. I looked at her and she started crying. I swear. I never said anything. I kept my eyes down after that, but she kept crying. Jesus, I’m sorry!”

For a long minute, Tony and Jake just looked at me in silence. Then Tony lifted the cane again. For the second time that day, Jake reached up and stayed his hand. “How about you ask her on the phone tonight?” Jake said softly, watching me. “If she says different, we can take his tongue. Sound good?”

And, in that moment, Jake became my bestest friend. I wrenched in huge, desperate breaths and let them out in wracking sobs. “Thank you,” I cried. “Thank you, master. Thank you. Thank you.”

It was with extreme reluctance that Tony lowered his switch.
